Pedal feel is the product of two factors: pedal effort and pedal travel. Pedal effort is the force you need to apply to the brake pedal to get the car to slow down. By pedal travel we mean the actual distance the brake pedal has to travel to activate the brakes.
In cars with poor pedal feel you never know what to expect from your brakes. You will feel out of control on the road, and that’s a dangerous state to be in. For brakes to be safe and stable, the pedal feel should be consistent.
So what you really need is not just the ability to stop, but the assurance of knowing that every time you apply your brakes, you need to use exactly the same pressure, and to depress the pedal the same distance. The consistency of pedal effort and pedal travel were tested within one specific speed category as well as across different speed categories. To this end, the brakes were applied 3 times at 4 different speeds – so 12 times in total – with a constant deceleration of 0.3 g across all speeds.
